30 Seconds to Fame

Image
Title of this post is same as "Realty Show for Talent Display" on Fox TV - In India it comes on one of the channels that I don't remember the name. On this show, performers will have 30 seconds to impress an audience and a panel of judges with their skills. Each week's winner will win a cash prize of $25,000. Another intersesting thing that happens is that studio audience can vote the contestant out even before 30 seconds are over if they don't really like the performance or contestant. And believe me, 30% cases, contestants are voted out even before 30 seconds. It is really interesting and intriguing concept but at the same time a scary proposition if you link it to the real world scenarios where you are possibly judged "thumbs-up" or "thumbs-down" probably within first 30 seconds of you meeting someone, within 30 seconds of you conducting trainings/sessions/presentations, within 30 seconds of you meeting a date, within 30 seconds of talking t

20-minute Battle Royale !

Deep down in the time wrap the dark hue has totally covered my part of the earth, pigeons had gone into sewer holes in my apartment complex to sleep and only tone that contributed to the decibel-level outside were occasional cell-phone polyphonic tunes or wind-chimes getting excited by occasional summer gust of wind. It was time to strech out of my comfort zone in my apartment and lug outside for my recommended 20 min walk. It is kind of biological alarm that starts ringing with all the technological frills - like stern faces of doctor gazing down into my eyes and threatning with model of heart in his hand showing how bad cholestrol was winning the marathon in my veins and leaving its won-plaques littered on the way - clogging my good cholestrol. In my brain, there is this royal parliment that has two zones clearly marked out - proponents and opponents and believe me the sounds, shrieks and thumping of opponents really have such an impact that little and my muscles in legs suddenly g

Crossing the river towards UTOPIA

"Old Order Changeth yielding place to new " If I remember correctly, this is the right quote. It summarizes the essence of the change which is - It is not "If" but "When". Not very far off , there is a huge river that meanders by through beautfiul valleys and dangerous gourges. Everyone of us is trying to cross this river to reach to the other end where I can see lush green meadows, fruit-laden trees and shrubs and everything else that anyone can ask for as perfect utopia. Recently, I had to make a choice of moving forward towards the other end and that is when I stepped on to another rock in this river. This rock is much smaller than the one that I was standing for more than five long years and as you can imagine my legs had started aching and my muscles had started getting stiff. That big rock is one of the most shapely rocks in this river with seemingly right kind of surface where you can perch and enjoy the chill and cold water flowing by you. Isn'

Tea under banyan tree

Dusty village road with tar getting ripped off on the sides at acute angles and small pot-holes appearing with having dried up leaves from old banyan trees standing tall on either sides. Serene pond on the side of the road with occasional bubbles in midst of ripples created by small fishes. Old dilapidated temple and a small chai-shop with local village snacks in glass bottles covered with dust from the road settled nicely camaflouging the sppousedly lip-smacking snacks inside and rusty lids trying to keep them fresh with natural preservatives. An Old couple doing the dual role , I guess, of serving hot chai in small glasses to the customers going on that road and also being care-takers of the temple in the background. Wonder if at any point of time pilgrims would outnumber the travellers at this spot. Smelling fresh air, hearing sound of dried leaves slowly gliding down, seeing the long long roots of banyan trees appearing like tresses of a newly wed bride , touching serene pond wa

What is important to you - Money, Recognition, Position, Love for Job

Simple question which lot of folks do ask themselves or others - depends on which side of the table you are sitting. And you know what - I think most of the people who ask this question do this in an implicit garb of curiosity; I think it is only 5%-10% of the human race that knew and will know on their priorities as clear as a morning dew. It is a tough proposition by any strech of imagination to choose one of the three - Money <---> Recognition <---> Position <---> Love for Job Just to take an sample set of various friends/acquantainces that I have and what they are doing right now in their careers, can most of the blokes for sure SAY with conviction that they have these priorities all sorted out. Well, I must admit, there are few and that is who I categorize as 5%-10% of human race. I want to clarify that someone choosing one against the other - there is nothing wrong in there. Important is whether these are lined up correctly in brain-map. Post your comments for

What made kings what they were ?

Recently I was going through some of the articles on internet on the history of Mughal dynasty. It was really interesting to know that this dynasty ruled India for more than 900 years .. which is 9 centuries. It is amazing to know how the dynasty went from strength to strength in its earlier years. But it more amazing to know how this dynasty had a downfall during its last century especially when Aurangzeb came in. It was lot of intrigue and curiousity that sprung up inside me - when I drew parallel to these kings from Aurangzeb onwards to the current big leaders in our world we have. If I need to use a one single word that draws a parallel in old and new times regarding the downfalls - it is "ARROGANCE". We can see that right from flourishing and then downfall of Mughal empire, British empire etc. etc. In the world scenarios also, if we look at "Greek empires", "Roman Empires" - the empires that took centuries to make and flourish - it just took one or tw

Decade of life - time to introspect

It has been a decade since I have come out of my college. Lately I have got some time for myself and that is when I realized that till now I was not living my life with a "game-plan" but I was merely doing small bits of "contribution" to the grand social-system to enhance it economically and technologically. So back to the original question - how much time did I really spend thinking and talking to/about mylself in last on decade. Looks to me that it is very minimal. Life seems to have been like a script written by some great director somewhere whose sole motive was to keep me busy - utilize max bandwidth cycles -> as they call it in our industry. Probably I am also the script writer for some more folks in my life that includes my co-workers or my family. Isn't it true that society, corporations and governments in general just don't want anyone on the face of this earth to *stop* and then think about himself and what his/her priorities are , what he/she l
